Nitrous Oxide

Taking proper care of your mouth is essential for preventing serious oral health issues from developing. A major part of maintaining a healthy mouth involves brushing and flossing your teeth at home every day. While your home oral hygiene routine is important, so too is professional dental care. The ADA recommends professional cleanings and exams every 6 months.

Sometimes, dental care is needed between these visits to treat issues that have developed. If the thought of going to the dentist makes you feel anxious, however, you may avoid getting the professional care you need. This can have severe consequences on your oral, and overall, health. Pacific Modern Dentistry can help you to get the dental care you need with nitrous oxide.

What Happens if I Ignore Professional Dental Care?

Dental care is a very important component of maintaining your oral health. Routine dental exams allow for the detection of oral health issues in their earliest stages. This allows for prompt treatment, preventing more serious issues from developing. Ignoring routine dental care can lead to issues going undiagnosed and untreated. If you are experiencing symptoms of an oral health issue, ignoring treatment can lead to the issue worsening. Most issues do not go away on their own. As the condition worsens, your oral health is compromised, as are the quality of your smile, your overall health, and your quality of life. The longer you wait to have an issue treated, the more invasive, and expensive, the treatment becomes.

What is Nitrous Oxide?

Nitrous oxide is a form of sedation. Sedation helps you to feel relaxed and comfortable while you undergo dental treatment. When you are relaxed, you can sit still, and we can provide you with safe, effective care.

You probably know nitrous oxide under its other name, laughing gas. It is the mildest, safest sedative available, and has been used in the dental field for decades. This type of sedative is designed to help take the edge off so that you can remain calm, relaxed, and comfortable during your appointment. It also functions to raise your pain threshold and reduce your gag reflex. All of these factors help to make your dental visits more pleasant.

How Does Nitrous Oxide Work?

Nitrous oxide is an inhaled sedative. It is administered through a small mask worn over your nose. The nitrous oxide is mixed with oxygen. As you breathe the gas in, it begins to work almost instantly, helping you to feel calmer and more relaxed. You are still completely conscious during your treatment. You can communicate with us and respond to any requests we might have. Once your treatment is over, the nitrous oxide is shut off. The oxygen is left running for a few extra minutes, helping to ensure that the sedative is removed completely from your system. The effects of nitrous oxide wear off almost immediately, and you are back to your normal self quickly. You can even drive yourself home after your appointment in most cases.

What are the Benefits of Using Nitrous Oxide?

There are many benefits associated with nitrous oxide. These benefits include:
•  No needles or medications are needed.
•  Fast-acting. The sedation goes to work almost immediately.
•  Quick to wear off. You are back to your normal self almost right away, and can even drive yourself home after your appointment is over.

Nitrous oxide is a completely safe, highly effective way to help you relax so that we can provide you with the dental care you need. For more information, and to find out if nitrous oxide is right for you, call Pacific Modern Dentistry today at (206) 607-9822.
