Gold Restorations
Seattle, WA

Gold crown model used by Seattle dentist at Pacific Modern Dentistry.Restoration dentistry has evolved enormously in recent years, and everything we do now is with esthetics in mind. People are more conscious than ever before about how others perceive their smile. Pacific Modern Dentistry will explain why gold restorations are one of the best solutions for your dental needs.

The History of Gold Restorations

Gold restoration dentistry has been around since the time of ancient Egypt, and it was introduced in dentistry about 100 years ago. Gold is one of the most durable materials used in dental procedures, and it has withstood the test of time. At some point in time, gold dental work was seen as a sign of success, but as time went on, aesthetics became more important than durability and other materials were invented to maintain the natural look of teeth. The problem is that some of them are much less durable than gold.

New technology has also changed gold restorations, and we have adapted. Some gold restorations can be applied to the crown, so very little or no gold shows on the surface. All these changes are made to make this durable metal more appealing to patients whom many times refuse this choice. In recent years concern over mercury in dental fillings has resulted in a large segment of the population with old fillings to redo them with ceramic restoration dental fillings with resin, a material that is made to match the color of your teeth.

Advantages of Gold Restorations

When choosing materials to use in a dental filling or other cosmetic procedure, esthetics should not be the only consideration. Durability is an essential component and one that we will discuss with you during your consultation. Using a material that won't chip or crack when eating hard foods is critical, so you don't have to keep getting your teeth fixed.

Using gold restorations has numerous advantages to list, but these are the most important ones:
•  Resistance to breaks or cracks.
•  Highly pliable.
•  Maintenance of integrity after many years.
•  Adapts to the temperature in the mouth like natural teeth do.
•  Protects the enamel from breakage.
•  Does not change shape.
•  Does not absorb saliva.
•  Does not stain teeth.
•  Does not cause allergic reactions.
•  Wears as natural teeth do.
•  Can be applied in very thin layers.
•  Can last at least 40 to 50 years .
•  Nontoxic.
•  Can be used along with other porcelain restorations to make them more durable.

Disadvantages of Gold Restoration

The main downside of gold restoration is that it doesn’t match the color of your natural teeth and it’s very noticeable. This type of restoration can also be costlier because gold is expensive. Using this procedure requires two appointments, one to prepare the tooth and another to apply the material.

Types of Gold Restoration

There are two basic types of gold restorations. Inlays which fill small cavities and onlays, which cover a more significant part of the tooth. Gold restorations are most commonly used in molars, but sometimes a thin layer can be applied along with another material when going on the front teeth. Gold restorations may be the only procedure your tooth will need, due to its longevity.
